Is Solar Worth It in Pakistan?
Pakistan has some of the highest solar irradiance in Asia - around 5 to 6 kWh per square metre per day in most of the country. Combined with frequent load shedding and rising electricity tariffs, solar payback periods have dropped dramatically in recent years.
Why solar makes sense in Pakistan right now
Three factors have converged to make solar genuinely compelling for Pakistani households:
- High and rising tariffs. NEPRA slab rates have increased significantly since 2022. Households in the Rs. 40–50/unit range get the strongest payback from solar because every unit generated avoids a high-slab bill.
- Excellent solar resource. Pakistan averages 5.3 kWh/m²/day across the country - among the best in Asia. Punjab and Sindh often exceed 5.5. That means your panels generate more per kW installed than most of Europe or even large parts of North America.
- Falling panel prices. The global solar supply glut has pushed panel costs to record lows. A quality 540W panel now costs a fraction of what it did in 2020, bringing installed cost-per-kW down significantly.

What affects payback period?
The payback calculator gives you a solid estimate, but here are the variables that matter most:
- Your current tariff slab. If you're paying Rs. 40/unit, solar saves you 40 rupees per unit generated. At Rs. 14/unit, the maths is much weaker.
- On-grid vs off-grid. On-grid (net metering) systems export surplus power to the grid and earn a credit on your bill. Off-grid or hybrid systems with batteries cost more but provide power during outages.
- Quality of equipment. Tier-1 panels (Longi, JA Solar, Canadian Solar) degrade at ~0.5%/year vs 1–2% for lower-quality panels. Over 25 years this adds up significantly.
- Shading and roof orientation. A south-facing, shade-free roof generates roughly 10–15% more per year than an east or west-facing one.
- Net metering approval. AEDB-licensed installers can file for net metering with your DISCO. Approval typically takes 1–3 months and allows you to sell surplus units back at the avoided cost rate.
Net metering and AEDB licensing
For on-grid net metering in Pakistan, your installer must be licensed by AEDB (Alternative Energy Development Board). Only AEDB-licensed installers can legally file the net metering application with your DISCO.
Once connected, your bi-directional meter tracks both import (what you draw from the grid) and export (what you send back). Your monthly bill offsets exported units against imported units at the current net metering buyback rate set by NEPRA.
Realistic payback expectations
For a household paying Rs. 35–45/unit and installing a 5 kW system in 2024–2025, a payback period of 3 to 5 years is realistic. After payback, the system continues generating effectively free electricity for another 20+ years. Lifetime savings in the range of Rs. 15–30 lakh are achievable depending on tariff growth.
